First off…if you made it here from the Real Witches of Halloween Blog Tour, WELCOME!
Second of all, Congratulations on surviving the non-Rapture (again)!
Today’s topic is a continuation of household hacks for replacing plastics, where we’ll be talking about how to reuse (glass) Coke (or other soda) bottles. I will preface this by saying that this is actually a little bit of a problem for us–we don’t have glass recycling in the apartments we live in right now and storage is occasionally a problem until we can take a trip to the recycling center, so…we have quite a few Coke bottles (we buy *real* Coca-Cola, made with sugar rather than high fructose corn syrup as a special treat).
Things to do with glass soda bottles:
(Taper) Candle holders
Vase
Cooking Oil dispenser (add a spout)
Herb storage (put a cork in it)
I love adding an oil dispenser! Didn’t know it would fit…we have all sorts of glass bottles up on a shelf. I make flavored oils and vinegars, extracts, hot sauce, etc, a lot, so it’s nice to have them on hand.
Oh yeah! And you can even stuff some herbs in there with the vinegar, oil, etc before hand and stuff a cork in it to infuse in a cupboard, and yank it out and add a stopper when its ready to go. Cleaning it out might require a bit more patience…I have a lab brush, that you use for test tubes…since our baby bottle brush is too fat for the opening.
Mm, real Coca-Cola. I stopped drinking soda a while back and I think the reason why I don’t miss the thing is because around here Coke doesn’t taste good. I like my real sugar. Now when I go someplace (Upstate New York is usually good for it) I can get a few and do something useful with my bottles.
Thanks a bunch!
This is a great Real Witches of Halloween post!
Thanks for stopping by and glad you enjoyed it! I haven’t actually gotten around to any seasonal posts yet, lol…its my first Samhain back in Virginia in a while, and its been hot enough that we’re still going to the beach at least once a week and I’m not feeling the Harvest, if you know what I mean.
If you have a Mexican or Hispanic grocery in your area, you can often get (real) Coca-Cola (and some wacky Fanta flavors) there…our regular grocery store (since we live in a military town and they have well-stocked international food sections) actually carries it, but you have to look in the Mexican food section. I’m not a fan of the “new” Coke (even though it hasn’t been new in over a decade or two)…
You can’t get real glass coke bottles easily here. When I was a kid it was all glass and now it’s mainly plastic. A few years ago, Coca-Cola introduced the glass bottles back but you can only buy them in packs of four and they charge a fortune! And you have to hunt them down too. Shame really as there’s something nostalgic about the bottles.
It stinks that you can’t find them…though at least the ideas all work with other beverage bottles (wine, beer, etc). I really like the retro-kitchen look though, which is why I’m partial to the Coca-Cola bottles (that and its an added bonus to my favorite beverage!)
I just bought a 24 pack of coke in the glass bottles for $20. I was suprised I even found them. If you have a sams club check them out to see if they have any.
We have glass coke bottles (sells individually) at our local Dollar General in Northern Arizona. Just look around – you’ll be surprized where you’ll find them! 🙂
