Mealtime Prayers for Pagan Families

Blessed be the Earth for giving birth to this food
Blessed be the Sun for nourishing it
Blessed be the Wind for carrying its seed
Blessed be the Rain for quenching its thirst.
Blessed be the hands that helped to grow this food,
To bring it to our tables
To nourish our minds, bodies, and spirits.
Blessed be our friends, our families, and our loved ones.
Blessed Be.

—–

This food comes from the earth and the sky
It is the gift of the entire universe
And the fruit of much hard work
I vow to live a life that is worthy to receive it

(traditional Buddhist mealtime prayer)

—–

Lady and Lord,
Thank you for this food which we’re going to eat
Thank you for the earth in which it grew,
the rain that watered it,
the wind which gave it breath
and the sun which gave it life
Thank you for the life which was given so we can eat
Blessed be.

—–

Lord and Lady, watch over us,
and bless us as we eat.
Bless this food, this bounty of earth,
we thank you, so mote it be.

—–

Earth who gives to us our food,
Sun who makes it ripe and good,
Dearest earth and dearest sun,
Joy and Love for all you’ve done

—–

Give thanks to the Mother Earth.
Give thanks to the Father Sun.
Give thanks to the plants in the garden,
Where the Mother and Father are One.

Thank you! This is just what I was looking for. My family is Unitarian Universalist, but I am leading a camping trip with 15 families of various religions and was looking for a mealtime blessing.

    Lovely, thank you.

  5. I just figured out where the particular blessing I used in my novel had come from! I had found and printed this page over a year ago, as I didn’t have a trustworthy comp at that point! I use the same one myself when eating anyway, though 🙂 I love this whole list though, lovely ❤ If you don't mind my asking, where did this one come from?

    • Honestly…at this point, I have no idea! My kids are 6 1/2 and “almost 8” (I get in trouble from Chickadee if I say she’s 7, as her birthday is next month) and I’ve been collecting this stuff since before she was born. We like this one too, though now that they are older, we’ve taken to having them take turns creating their own blessings at mealtimes. Sometimes it works, and sometimes–well, Sharkbait led last night’s mealtime prayer and it went something like this (paraphrased): Thank you for the sun and the rain and the many hand that bring this food even though its green and smelly and I’m not going to eat it anyways! (He was *not* a fan of the zucchini soup!)

    Thank you for these!
I’ve just moved my daughter and I into my grandmother’s house and they are very Christian, attempting to push their belief on my impressionable autistic daughter and these are perfect for her. I’ve tried to keep religious views neutral for her but the time has come. Thank you so much!
    Blessed be
